Andros Island (Greece, Cyclades)

Andros is an island in the Aegean Sea, southeast of Evia. It is the northernmost island of the Cyclades and the second largest in size. The capital of the island is Andros or Chora, while its port is Gavrio.

Andros Island (Greece, Cyclades)  is connected to mainland Greece by sea via Rafina, within 36 miles.    It is characterized by its beautifully whitewashed villages with bougainvillea courtyards and the neoclassical buildings in Chora.

The capital Andros or Chora, is on the southeastern coast.  Architecturally, the city combines neo-classics of the interwar period with the characteristic Cycladic houses. In the area of the metropolitan church of the city, there are many old mansions at its center, the result of a wealth of shipowners who flourished in the city in the past.

Batsi

Batsi Andros is a coastal traditional village of Andros. In recent decades, it has evolved into one of the most touristic villages in Andros. It is picturesque with amphitheatrical construction and the characteristic sandy beach.

Gavrio port

It is on the west coast of the island, and it is interesting for the impressive tower of Agios Petros. It is a tourist place for Andros as there are two of the most beautiful beaches of the island, the beach of Agios Petros and the Golden Beach (or Chrissi Ammos or Psili Ammos), 2-3 kilometers away.

Korthi

Ormos Korthi is a seaside village on the southwest coast of Andros. The surrounding area of Ormos Korthi is surrounded by beautiful picturesque villages with rich folklore and archaeological monuments. Due to the many paths, the area is suitable for walking and walking.

Archaeological Museum of Andros in Chora

Containing finds from the Geometric, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Its important exhibits include findings from the Geometric period from Zagora, the statue of Hermes of Andros, a Roman copy of the Praxiteles’ prototype, and a copy of the Charter of King.

 Naval Museum

The Naval Museum of Andros in Chora was founded in 1972. It includes an extensive collection of articles on naval tradition, such as nautical calendars, photos, and wonderful ship models.

 

Museum of Modern Art Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris in Chora

The Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated in 1979 and was donated by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation. He has hosted works by significant Greek and foreign painters such as Tsarouchis and Moralis.  The Foundation organizes every summer at the Museum of Contemporary Art exhibitions of international prestige that gather visitors.

Archaeological Museum of Paleopolis in Paleopolis village

You can visit the archaeological museum in Paleopolis, where important findings from the wider region are exhibited. Paleopolis is the ancient city of Andros, where it flourished from the classical era to the Roman era.

Theofilos Kairis Museum in Chora

The Kairis library has a large and rare collection of publications, manuscripts, historical records.

Furthermore, the Olive Museum of Cyclades inPitrofosvillage and  Folklore and the Christian Art Museum in Chora.

 

Cave “Foros” at Aladinos Village

Near the village, Aladino is the cave of Foros, which has countless stalactites and stalagmites.Ιt is enchanting with hanging rocks, helictites, and limestone. The temperature inside the cave is 16-17o C throughout the year with 75% humidity. Cave Foros was first explored in 1937 by the couple Ioannis and Anna Petroheilou.

The Upper Castle  or Faneromeni Castle

The Upper Castle or Faneromeni Castle is located north of Ormos Korth. It was the strongest and largest medieval state of Andros and was built by the Venetians.  The castle still has ruins of houses, aqueducts, and walls.

Beaches  in Andros Island (Greece, Cyclades)

Andros has enchanting beaches with fine sandy and rocky beaches. The most popular sandy beaches are Niborio in Chora, Chryssi Ammos in Kypri, and Achla, which can be reached by boat, starting from Chora harbor or by Vourkoti.
There are, of course, rocky beaches that are popular, such as Gialia in Stenies, Chalkolimion in the Stavropeda area.

 It is also suggested that the beaches of Tria Gryas the jump and Booros (by boat) in Korthio Breeze are distinguished by their unchangeable natural beauty.

Notable is the beach of Zorgos, to the north of the island, with amazing waters in an imposing location.
To the north of the island are the beaches of Vitali and Pisolimiona.
In north Korthi, there is also the sandy beach of Mylos.  Mylos beach is a great surprise for windsurfers and windsurfers
due to the wind blowing in the wind.

TRADITIONAL FOOD in Andros Island (Greece, Cyclades)

Andros is an island with rich local traditional dishes and pastries. The specialty of the island is froutalia. It is an omelet that, apart from eggs, includes potatoes in washers and traditional sausages.

Also known are the traditional almonds, pastitsio, pastels, and kaltsounia. The visitor can find local traditional pastries in all the confectioneries of the island.
